Columbus Next Generation Corporation (NextGen) was created in 2012 by former Mayor Michael Coleman. Its purpose is to identify underutilized property in core neighborhoods that have the potential to thrive. NextGen accomplishes this by identifying underutilized land and properties, securing control of the property, creating a master plan for properties and/or land, completing feasibility studies, and soliciting local community input and support. These projects are then later positioned for sale to developers to complete the development and building process.
NextGen’s targeted area for development is in the 1950 boundaries of the City of Columbus with emphasis in the following neighborhoods; Linden, Near Eastside and Southside. NextGen currently owns 20 plus parcels with an approximate land cost of $3 million dollars primarily in the Linden area. Since our inception, NextGen‘s accomplishments include:
- Sold the former Carl Brown grocery store site (five acres located on Mt. Vernon Avenue) to Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) creating revenue for our organization.
- Acquired a former adult book store located on Parsons Avenue to support Parsons Avenue Redevelopment Corporation in its efforts to improve Parsons Avenue. The property was sold to a developer and is now a vegan restaurant.
- Renovated four City of Columbus owned properties in Franklinton, which were transferred to NextGen to reposition these properties supporting revitalization in the East Franklinton area.
- Purchased a former drive-thru store to assist Community for All People in its desire to bring fresh foods to the South side. Community Development for All People transformed the property into a space to provide free fresh food to underserved members in the community. The development of the space will transform food delivery to core neighborhoods.
- Acquired 1410 Cleveland Avenue, saving the Point of Pride building from possible foreclosure. Managed and provided needed upgrades to the building. The property was transferred to the City of Columbus in 2017.
- Purchased the former McNabb Funeral home site (E. Long Street), preserving its historical elements.
- Selected Kingsley+Co & Borror to develop a mix-use project of commercial space and apartments on the site, which is estimated to cost approximately $20 million dollars.
- Supported small and minority business as part of our ongoing commitment to small and emerging business enterprise. NextGen will continue our support and focus in this area.
Columbus has the lowest unemployment rate of Ohio’s major metro areas and continues to transition from economic recovery to expansion. However, there is a significant supply of underutilized land and properties in communities in need of economic stimulation. NextGen was formed by the City of Columbus to help address this gap.
Our Vision
NestGen will catalyze opportunities that will ultimately transform communities into vibrant and productive places desired by both residents and businesses. Columbus Next Generation Corporation is reestablishing the history of thriving business enterprise and supportive community partners along Franklinton, Linden, the Near East Side and Parsons Avenue.
